Nuremberg 1561 UFO Battle: Aerial Phenomenon

UFOs

On the morning of April 14, 1561, between 4 and 5 a.m., residents of Nuremberg, Germany, witnessed a spectacular and terrifying celestial event. As the sun rose, many men and women inside the city, near its gates, and in the surrounding countryside observed what appeared to be an aerial battle unfolding in the sky. According to a contemporary broadsheet printed by local artist and letter-painter Hans Glaser, dozens of strange objects emerged, including blood-red spheres, crosses, cylinders, and tubes resembling cannon barrels. These objects moved erratically, clashing with one another for over an hour in what witnesses described as a fierce combat.

The objects flew in and out of the sun, some forming lines of three or squares of four, while others moved independently. Blood-red crosses and strips appeared among them, and the entire spectacle was chaotic and alarming. Eventually, the exhausted objects seemed to catch fire and fell to the earth, burning up and producing thick smoke. Following this, a large black spear-shaped object, very long and thick, appeared in the sky with its point directed westward.

Hans Glaser’s woodcut broadsheet, which survives today in the Zentralbibliothek Zürich, vividly illustrates the scene and interprets the event as a divine warning from God, urging repentance amid the religious and political turmoil of the Reformation era. The broadsheet emphasizes that such signs were sent by the Almighty to call people back to faith.

Modern interpretations vary widely. Many UFO researchers view the event as an early mass sighting of extraterrestrial craft engaged in some form of aerial conflict. Skeptics propose natural explanations such as a complex atmospheric optical phenomenon (possibly involving sun dogs or parhelia), a meteor shower, or even ball lightning combined with mass hysteria. Carl Jung discussed the event in his book Flying Saucers, suggesting it represented a collective psychic vision or archetype emerging during a time of societal stress.

The Nuremberg event of 1561 remains one of the most famous pre-modern mass UFO sightings due to the detailed contemporary documentation and dramatic woodcut illustration. It continues to fascinate historians, astronomers, and UFO enthusiasts alike as a striking example of how unusual aerial phenomena were interpreted through a religious lens in the 16th century.
