In July 1971 (specifically July 2 according to the primary witness), the USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67), a massive aircraft carrier, was operating north of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic, returning from training exercises in the Caribbean. While the ship was in a portion of the area known as the Bermuda Triangle, a dramatic and unexplained event occurred that affected the entire vessel.
Jim Kopf, a communications specialist assigned to the ship’s communications department, was on duty monitoring eight teletype machines printing fleet broadcasts. Suddenly, every incoming message began turning into complete gibberish. Alarmed, he contacted Facilities Control, only to be told that all communications across the ship were out.
Moments later, crew members on the upper decks began shouting. A large, glowing orange-yellow sphere (described by some as reddish or pulsating) appeared hovering silently above the flight deck. The object was estimated to be very large and possibly hundreds of feet across depending on its altitude. It emitted no sound and caused widespread electromagnetic interference. Weapons systems reportedly failed to respond, and aircraft on the deck could not be launched.
The glowing sphere hovered for several minutes before shooting straight up and disappearing at tremendous speed. Immediately afterward, all electronic systems and communications returned to normal.
The incident was reportedly followed by the arrival of men in dark suits via helicopter, who debriefed witnesses and enforced silence. The event was kept quiet for decades until Jim Kopf went public with his account around 2000–2001, including testimony for Steven Greer’s Disclosure Project.
The USS John F. Kennedy case is notable for its combination of electromagnetic effects, visual confirmation by multiple crew members, and the immediate shutdown of critical ship systems. It remains one of the more compelling carrier-based UFO encounters from the modern era.
